SallyAnne McBride passed away peacefully on December 29, 2025, after a brief hospital stay, surrounded by her loving family at the Pete and Jelaine Horton Center Skilled Nursing Facility in Sturgeon Bay. Her family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the excellent care and their compassionate and kind nursing staff. Lastly most importantly thanking her primary doctor, Dr. Richard Hoegen for many years of excellent care, we thank you.
Born on October 19, in Glenview, Illinois, Sally was the oldest of three children, Sally (1933), Walter Jr. (1935), and Susan (1950), to Eleanor (Friedle) and Walter J. Palcynsky. After the war, they moved to Diamond Lake, IL. She attended Diamond Lake Grade School, and later graduated at the top of her class at Libertyville High School. Sally spent a lot of time with her grandparents, especially her grandmother Anna, whom she was especially close to. She spent her days swimming, boating, fishing, and sledding on beautiful Diamond Lake with her brother and best friend MaryAnn.
She first set eyes on the love of her life, Howard, when a young handsome Navy man came to speak to her class about the war effort, and later reconnected with him at a tennis game. They were married on January 17, 1953 and then moved to Chicago where Howard became a Chicago Police Officer.
The proud matriarch of a large and happy family, Sally and Howard raised seven children--- Michael, Kevin, Kathy, Karin, Mary, Maureen, and Elizabeth. She devoted herself to their education and Catholic upbringing. She did it all with immeasurable grace and strength. In 1985, Howard retired and they moved to Sally's dream home in Bailey's Harbor, WI. She lovingly cared for Howard until his passing in 1994.
Nothing delighted her more than her growing family; she was an actively involved grandmother to thirteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. To them, she was "Grandma in the Woods," a name immortalized on a wooden sign at the start of her long driveway. Her home was always a welcoming haven to all her friends and family. You could always count on morning tea steaming, pancakes on the griddle, a card game at the kitchen table, and the smell of peanut butter cookies baking.
Sally loved to travel with her family. She loved sharing travel stories which included trips to Italy with her sister Susan and her brother in law Paul Schinner, her favorite national park, Yellowstone, and so many other adventures.
At home, she enjoyed baking, crossword puzzles, playing cards, and was an avid reader. She bowled with the Women's Door County League at the Sister Bay Bowl, spent a decade working at Chelsea Antiques and Blue Willow shop where she made life-long friends, enjoyed many performances at Peninsula Players and Northern Sky Theatre, took long walks at Tofte Point in Bailey's Harbor, and was a devoted supporter of the Bailey's Harbor 4th of July Fireworks Fund and treasured Bailey's Harbor Library, where she made weekly visits.
Sally's quiet strength, kindness, and endless generosity left a strong legacy of joy and hospitality, faith and perseverance. She epitomized grace. We will remember her fighting spirit, her boundless heart for others, and the way she made every person feel at home. We are all immeasurably blessed because of her.
Sally was preceded in death by her husband, Howard (1994); her brother, Walter Jr. (2020); and her granddaughter, Nicole (1985). She is survived by her seven children, Michael Mcbride of Stevensville, MT., Kevin (Lynn) McBride of Casper, WY., Kathy (Richard) Marcus of Stevensville, MT., Karin (John) Claibourne of Sister Bay, WI., Mary (Bill) Mann of Kalispell, MT., Maureen (Tom) Martin of Chicago, IL., and Elizabeth (Shawn McKindles) McBride of Sturgeon Bay, WI.; her sister, Susan (Paul) Schinner of Bailey, CO.; her grandchildren, Gretchen (Dan) Davis, Leslie (Alex) Tweedie, Ben Marcus, Phil (Lauren) Marcus, Danielle (Craig) Leeds, Sean McBride, Christopher (Amanda) McBride, Corrin (Scott) Wendell, Josh (Nicole) Martin, Shane (Alicia) Martin, Ashley Logerquist (Ryan Little), and Kirsten Logerquist; and many beloved great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held in spring 2026 in Door County; time and location will be announced.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to a Friends of Peninsula State Park memorial bench, the Bailey's Harbor Library, or the Door County Library Foundation Fund.
