LeRay Lamont Haney Sr., affectionately known to many as "Dirty Cheese," passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at the age of 54. He was in Green Bay, Wisconsin, surrounded by the warmth, love, and presence of those closest to him.
LeRay’s journey began in Zion, Illinois, where he was born, but he spent his formative years growing up in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He went to school at Nelson Tremper High School and later attended Gateway College, where he earned his HVAC certification. Ready for a new chapter, LeRay eventually relocated to Green Bay, taking on a role as a Logistics Operator (LTO) with Georgia Pacific.
At work, LeRay was known for his incredible work ethic. Through sheer determination, hard work, and a genuine eagerness to learn, he took on complex logistical challenges. His dedication didn't go unnoticed; his accomplishments were frequently celebrated with raises, bonuses, and promotions, including stepping up as a Backup Coach. He poured his heart into his career until health challenges led him to take medical leave, eventually resigning in September of 2024.
While his professional milestones were deeply rewarding, nothing compared to his proudest, most crowning achievement in life: being a father and having his only son, LeRay Haney Jr., right there by his side. LeRay Sr. was a man of unique talents and deep intellect. He was an avid chess player who loved the strategy of the game, and he had an insatiable love for fusing words together, leaving behind a legacy of beautiful, published sheets of poetry.
LeRay’s memory will be forever cherished by his loving family. He is survived by his mother, Sandra Springer; his brother, Pat Haney; his beloved son, LeRay Haney Jr.; his daughter, Navea Haney; his nieces, Nerissa McGuire and Ariana Springer; and a large, loving host of aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Greeting him in the next life are those who preceded him in death: his grandmothers, Christine Wakefield and Clara Goings; his grandfathers, Herbert Springer and Steve Haney; his father, Raymond Haney; and his sister, Sharon Haney.
