Eugene “Gene” Patek, 86, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2026, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born on August 31, 1939, to Henry and Laura (Wery) Patek, Gene grew up with strong roots that stayed with him his entire life. After graduating from Kewaunee High School in 1957, he went on to spend more than 40 years working as a transportation dispatcher, retiring in 2004. He took pride in his work, but his real joy was always found beyond the job—in his family, his home, and the life he built.

On April 15, 1967, Gene married the love of his life, Shirley VanDrese. Together, they created a home filled with laughter, love, and a deep appreciation for the simple things in life.

Gene is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley; his children and grandchildren: Tammy (Mike) Sampo, their children Shane (Kelsey) Sampo and their children Madison, Graham, and Payton, Kyle (special friend Lexie), Kim; Pam (Rob) Williams, their children Nevaeh, Ana, Estrella, Adam, and Jake; Dave (Heather) Patek, their children Kristyn (Logan) Wichlacz, Jerrid’s daughter Kayliana; and Mark (Jill) Patek, their children, Anthony (fiancée Trinity); and Zakary.

He is also survived by his sister, Marian Rameker; in-laws Lois VanDrese, Sharon (Alex) Sovey, Cheryl (Larry) Pepin, and Joann Reynolds; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Matt Krines; his parents-in-law, Harry and Sadie VanDrese; his grandson, Jerrid Patek; and in-laws Gene Rameker, Clayton VanDrese, Ronald (Judy) VanDrese, Ken (Laurie) VanDrese, Bill Reynolds, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He loved country living, farming, and spending peaceful moments watching wildlife and tending to his pond, where he especially enjoyed sitting and watching the fish. Known for his sense of humor, friendly nature, and genuine interest in others, Gene made lasting connections everywhere he went.

He enjoyed watching sports, especially the Brewers, Packers, and Bucks, and could often be found cheering on any game. He coached his sons in basketball and had a lifelong appreciation for sports.

Faith and community were important to Gene. At St. Louis Parish in Dykesville, he served as a Trustee, Parish Council member, and School Board member, always willing to lend his time and support.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 11, 2026 at St. Louis Parish in Dykesville, with visitation from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and Mass to follow.

In place of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Gene’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Gene will be remembered for his laughter, his kindness, and the way he made the people around him feel at home. His legacy lives on in the family he loved and the lives he touched.
