Darrel L. Auten, 72, of Nadeau, MI, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2025, after a courageous four-year battle with cancer. He was surrounded by loved ones in his final moments.
If you knew Darrel, you’ll never forget his distinctive laugh and his passion for a good time with family and friends.
Born in Holly, MI, on January 30, 1953, to Lloyd and Vivian (Green) Auten, Darrel helped on the family farm and completed his education through the 12th grade before serving his country in the Vietnam War.
After his tour, he combined his love for hot rods and Harleys with hard work, beginning a long career at General Motors in Flint, MI, where he worked for 36 years before retiring. Throughout his life, Darrel pursued his passions with intensity — especially his Harleys. Rarely a day went by that he wasn’t out riding, and he was known as the guy who would ride even in a snowstorm.
After retirement, Darrel relocated to the place he cherished most: Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. There, he spent his days hunting, repairing small engines, shooting pool in local leagues, and cruising in the ’57 Chevy he built himself.
Darrel is survived by his girlfriend, Selena Horn; his former spouse, Julie Auten; his brother, Dale Auten; and his sister, Darlene Ostrom. He is also survived by his children: William Auten, Andrea Hansard (Husband Chris Hansard), Katie (Auten) Measel, and Cody Auten (Wife Danielle Auten). He leaves behind his beloved nieces: Renee, Amy, Brandie, and Amanda; and his grandchildren: Kayla, Erin, Robin, Mackenzie, Addison, Amelia, and August.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Vivian (Green) Auten; his father, Lloyd Auten; and his nephew, Jimmy Ostrom.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to all of Darrel’s friends and extended family who shared in his journey and left a lasting impact on his life.
