Craig R. Remsburg

Craig Richard Remsburg, age 74, passed away September 24, 2025 in Green Bay, WI following a long struggle with his health.

Craig was born October 15, 1950 in Detroit to Charles and Dorothy (Hough) Remsburg. He grew up in Detroit and was a life-long fan of Detroit sports teams. He took many bus rides in his youth to see legends including Al Kaline at Tiger Stadium and his all-time favorite professional athlete Gordie Howe at Olympia Stadium.

Craig graduated from Redford High School, class of 1968. He attended Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn and graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. At MSU, he got his feet wet at the State News student newspaper as a sportswriter—a career choice that stuck with him for nearly five decades and about which he liked to say, “I get paid for watching sports—what could be better?”

After college, he spent a couple years as a journalist in the suburban Detroit area. Then in 1974, he moved to the Upper Peninsula and began a 42-year career with the Mining Journal, first as a general assignment reporter in the newspaper’s Ishpeming bureau, and soon after, as a sportswriter and editor at the main office in Marquette. Craig won numerous awards of excellence for his sports writing and editing at the Journal.

Throughout the years, he was well-respected and developed close relationships and rapport with coaches, athletes, athletic directors and other members of the U.P. sports community. He was also a dedicated council member of the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame from 1986 until his retirement in 2016. Aside from sports, he enjoyed listening to music—especially Lynyrd Skynyrd, 38 Special and other Southern Rockers—reading, and above all, fishing with his sons.

He is survived by his beloved children, Clinton Remsburg of Grand Rapids and Connor Remsburg of Westland, and his dear sister, Lynne Rose of Ypsilanti. He was also the loving grandfather of Colton and Berkleigh Remsburg. He was predeceased by his parents.

A memorial gathering in Michigan will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Craig’s memory to the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame for scholarships the organization provides annually to four U.P. scholar athletes. Donations may be mailed to:
