Susan C. Putnam (aka DUF) – (January 11, 1944 – January 26, 2018)

If I was telling this story, I would say:

Susan always said that before she was born, God wrote in His book His Plan for her. It said she would arrive on this earth in Oconto Falls, Wisconsin. Mother always said that her hair was the color of a shiny new penny. I say a “Penny from Heaven”. When you find one, consider it an angel from above. Susan knew God kept her in His heart and would guide her through the years. She knew that when it was time to go to His peace filled place, that she would not be afraid.

God picked her mother, Violet (Hyland) Putnam and her father Kendall Putnam. He picked her siblings, Connie (Ron) Oliver, Mary Ann/Cookie (Gary) Konitzer) and Kent Putnam. He knew that even though they were all different, they would always be together.

He picked her nieces, nephews and their children and great grandchildren. Then there were 12 aunts and uncles on her mother’s side and two on her father’s. The last time we counted, there were over 350 direct descendants. Many shared a laugh or two when we were together. We could use any excuse to have a party.

God picked more friends than I can even imagine. She touched so many lives and so many touched hers. I could tell of all her accomplishments through life and there were so many. But none of that is important as the people she knew and the people that knew her. Today, she cries tears of gratitude for the journey God took her on. She wanted to thank everyone of those people, no matter how you touched her. She said, “YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE.”

I would say that Susan never let her cancer define her or extinguish her light. She was confident, kind, full of love and best of all she was funny. She was a gentle clown. She never did anything to frighten children. If they were afraid, she would wait until something caught their eye and then if they wanted to see what she had they would move close to her. Some children wanted to keep her.

Oh, how she made us laugh. Sometimes we cried as she read us stories or poems our mother had written. So many stories of her first job as an information operator for the telephone company. Her naivete when someone asked her to look up names of fictional people.

One of my favorite stories was when her and Cookie had a tea party on the slanted porch roof at our grandmother’s house. They went through a window and took the table and chairs. There are stories of how our brother Kent was traumatized by their games. Such imagination! We really could write a book.

She gave us love, she gave us hope and she gave us strength to let her go to see what else God wrote in His book. I will watch for her as an Angel sent from God.

She especially wants to thank the Angel that placed her in His wings so they could fly away. She wants to thank the beautiful doctors, nurses and caregivers that took such good care of her. She especially will never forget, the Oncology Department or the IR Department at St. Mary’s and St. Vincent’s Hospitals; the gentle people at Heartland Hospice who were with her at the end. Added to the list are the neighbors in Oconto Falls and Green Bay, beautiful teachers at Calvary Pre-School, the people in the ADRC arthritis class, the people at the YMCA, Everybody’s Yoga Class, Sweethearts Clowns around Town, Bruce Nelson’s clowns that Face Painted at Brewer’s games and anyone we missed. God also gave her family strength to care for her. “You know who you are.”

My tears are also for gratitude for being able to say, “Susan was in my life”.

In lieu of flowers, the family will establish a Memorial Fund in memory of Susan.
Our family will have a remembrance of her life sometime in the spring when the flowers are bursting to life and the bluebirds are here to remind us of the happiness they bring. Watch for information sometime in March.

Our father Kendall Putnam preceded her in death over fifty years ago.
