Carlton Dean Adkins

April 29, 1941 — February 3, 2018

Carlton Dean Adkins, 76, died at home Feb. 3, 2018, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born April 29, 1941, in Pipestone, MN, he is the son of the late Carlton “Buck” and Erma (Appeldorn) Adkins. After graduating high school, Dean entered the US Navy and was stationed in Iceland where he worked for the Armed Forces Military Radio. While there, he got his pilot’s license and learned how to fly sailplanes. After his tour of duty, Dean worked in Sioux Falls, SD for radio station KSOO. He had a voice you just wanted to listen to. Getting tired of South Dakota’s long winters, Dean moved to Florida where he continued working in radio and attended Palm Beach Junior College. He met Nancy Wellons Wynn on a blind date and a year later the couple was wed on July 7, 1973. Dean was an active member of St. James United Methodist Church, Appleton where he sang in the choir, led adult Sunday School classes and helped wherever he was needed. After his family, he loved road trips with Nancy, reading, classical music, cooking and flying.

Dean is survived by his wife of 44 years, Nancy; sons, Christopher and Wyn; and granddaughter, Natalia.
